Junk Your Whirlybird

The whirlybird may currently be the most well-known ventilation system in the market and this is not even because it’s useful. The weird dome design is easy to remember.

Formally known as a turbine ventilator, this device has been patented in the early 1900s and its mechanism is simple: it “cools” residential and their commercial spaces by utilising fin blades and spins through the mechanical movement of either rising hot air or a strong breeze.

Do we truly know that it works? The truth is that however popular, the whirly is a bane amongst experts in the field as people tend to think that it’s such a great, cost-efficient product when it’s actually not that great at all.

Whirlybirds Should Go to the Bin. Here’s Why

The whirligig on paper is useful and inventive. It is divided into two types according to its operation: passive and active ventilation process. The more popular in the market, however, is the passive vent.

By using a process called convection and wind currents and catching this with its fin blades, it rotates to create a suction to remove the hot air. The fan dome rotates on a central ball bearing and goes faster the stronger the wind is or the hotter air in the roof is.

On the diagram and in text, this sounds extremely promising, until you notice the bad operational logic behind this device. This ventilation system is rife with issues that once we look at how whimsical it is, might not look good for anyone anymore.

As something that many experts tend to reference a lot, the whirly is extremely weak performance wise. The usefulness of a vent system is scientifically measured by its ability to remove hot air and heat load from a space called the air flow.

Whirligigs are tested and calculated to have a tested air flow rate that notches at an inconsistent 100 m3/h at its very best. To the uneducated, that may sound enough but here’s the twist: the minimum rule of thumb air flow rate in a roofing vent so you can cool a 150 m2 roofing area is 900 m3/h.

You would need at least 9 of these bad boys to cool your roof space. While they are inexpensive, stacking 9 units together with the installation costs of that job can break the bank.

The whirligig’s problem is that it needs rising hot air so that it can start doing its job. This means you have to wait for heat to build up, and then it starts working. Why suffer through hot air first before it starts? Why not eliminate heat load altogether? The whirly bird is obsolete. It’s not enough for your needs.

Why HAVEN Ventilation is Your Only Answer

HAVEN Ventilation does what the whirlybirds cannot when removing all that heat from your roof space. Harnessing the sunlight to operate, it can remove hot air completely from sun up to sun down without needing anything else. No more waiting for hot airs to remove it!

Our solar vent system is powerful – a lot more than any competition out there. It’s up to 7 to 21 times better than the standard residential whirlybirds, and can equal 100 whirligigs in commercial applications.

It will not cost you a single penny to operate, requires less work to install and can keep you cooler for longer. HAVEN Ventilation cools and improves your air-conditioning by boosting its efficiency. As heat is shunted out of your home, cool air gets in and stays, reducing the load of your AC.

Less heat, reduced moisture, reduced chance for mould growth and a better overall air quality.

HAVEN Ventilation is constructed with high-quality materials and its operational rating is made to withstand the harsh environments of Australia regardless of local climate.

Your unit comes with a 10-year warranty on the PV panel and 2 years warranty on all components (a 5 year extended warranty is available). High quality with a protection that gives you peace of mind.

Your whirlybird can do none of these. Efficient heat removal, excellent moisture removal and active operation at zero cost. HAVEN Ventilation is the last ventilation you will need.
